Fine-grained Concurrency with Separation Logic

Reasoning about concurrent programs involves representing the information that concurrent processes manipulate disjoint portions of memory. In sophisticated applications, the division of memory between processes is not static. Through operations, processes can exchange the implied ownership of memory cells. In addition, processes can also share ownership of cells in a controlled fashion as long...

ReLoC: A Mechanised Relational Logic for Fine-Grained Concurrency

We present ReLoC: a logic for proving refinements of programs in a language with higher-order state, fine-grained concurrency, polymorphism and recursive types. The core of our logic is a judgement e ≾ e ′ : τ , which expresses that a program e refines a program e ′ at type τ . In contrast to earlier work on refinements for languages with higher-order state and concurrency, ReLoC provides typea...

Modular fine-grained concurrency verification

Traditionally, concurrent data structures are protected by a single mutual exclusion lock so that only one thread may access the data structure at any time. This coarse-grained approach makes it relatively easy to reason about correctness, but it severely limits parallelism. More advanced algorithms instead perform synchronisation at a finer grain. They employ sophisticated synchronisation sche...

Automatic Verification for Fine-grained Concurrency

Recent program logics based on separation logic emphasise a modular approach to proving functional correctness for fine-grained concurrent programs. However, these logics have no automation support. In this paper, we present Caper, a prototype tool for automated reasoning in such a logic. Caper is based on symbolic execution, integrating reasoning about interference on shared data and about gho...

Angelic Semantics of Fine-Grained Concurrency

We introduce a game model for an Algol-like programming language with primitives for parallel composition and synchronization on semaphores. The semantics is based on a simplified version of Hyland-Ong-style games and it emphasizes the intuitive connection between the concurrent nature of games and that of computation. The model is fully abstract for may-equivalence.
